Scientific Evidence to Support Micronutrient Management Practices and Recommendations for Corn and Soybeans in Ontario

Project Summary
The project aims to develop an accessible knowledge base for micronutrient management, support the adoption of proven practices, provide the evidence to support updated recommendations and guidelines and identify priority areas for future research and innovation. The results of the project will support Ontario’s growers in making evidence-based decisions about micronutrient management that optimize yields and maintain long-term soil health. The systematic map will provide a curated, synthesized foundation of evidence that policymakers (e.g. Ontario Soil Management Committee) can use to revise and update Ontario’s micronutrient guidelines, ensuring they are current and aligned with the latest science. It will bridge crucial knowledge gaps and offer farmers, agronomists and other stakeholders a robust, research-backed framework for micronutrient management.
By clarifying critical thresholds, best practices, and diagnostic tools, the review will reduce uncertainty in micronutrient management and promote adoption of proven strategies. This will lead to optimized micronutrient use, improved crop yields, and enhanced soil health and will contribute to the sustainability and resilience of Ontario’s corn and soybean systems while identifying priority areas for future innovation and research.
Project Outputs
Ontario Corn and Soybean Micronutrients Knowledge Hub
A searchable collection of research and extension information relevant to micronutrient management for corn and soybean production in Ontario.
Mapping the evidence to support micronutrient management practices and recommendations in Ontario corn and soybean production: A Systematic Map
This systematic map identifies and characterizes the available literature on nine micronutrients (boron, chlorine/chloride, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel and zinc) in corn and soybean production.
Ontario Corn and Soybean Micronutrient Systematic Map Datasets
The datasets supporting the systematic map.
Using evidence to support micronutrient management practices and recommendations in Ontario corn and soybean production: A Knowledge Synthesis
This knowledge synthesis interprets and integrates the Ontario-relevant knowledge identified through the systematic map, organizing it into an applied decision pathway and examining how different forms of knowledge contribute to micronutrient management decisions.
Strengthening the evidence for micronutrient management practices and recommendations in Ontario corn and soybean production: A Research and Innovation Roadmap
This roadmap draws on the findings of the knowledge synthesis and the systematic map to identify opportunities to strengthen the evidence available for future micronutrient management, recommendations and decision-making.
